JOHN

Thank fuck Monroe Jones was a loud, mouthy fuck because it was his deep bellow through the echoey halls of Boles University that provided the caution I needed not to enter the building again. Dumb fuck that he was, striding in there dressed as a goddamn firefighter, had actually saved my life this time. His screamed warning, littered with curses, confirmed that the judging panel hadn’t been joking in those dozen messages I’d ignored.

The Game had changed. Drastically.

I acted fast, trying to get as far the fuck away as possible, but damn near tripped over Tris in the process. What in the fuck was she doing following me? Didn’t matter. I scooped her up and ran… but time was up.

The building exploded, throwing me—and Tris—through the air several paces. I twisted, taking the brunt of the fall on my shoulder, but her head cracked against my chin and I blacked out momentarily. When I came to, my ears were ringing so hard I couldn’t hear a damn word as Sin Grimaldi attempted to pry Tris from my grip.

“Fuck off,” I growled, but couldn’t even hear my own voice. Shit.

Grimaldi dick was trying to tell me something, gesturing urgently until I looked down at the delicate woman cradled against my chest. She was unconscious and her head was bleeding.

Horrified, I released my grip and Sinister gently lifted her into his arms. He cared about her. When the fuck had that happened? She hung limp from his embrace, and I scrambled to my feet to follow when he started walking, carrying her toward the fire truck.

Monroe Jones had just used them as a convenient disguise, but the rest of the crew were probably legitimate. Then again with the shocking development the Game council had announced, anything was possible.

One of the firefighters instructed Sin to place Tris down on the grass—or so I guessed by gestures and his responding actions. Fucking hell, had I burst my eardrums? That would be a problem. Not that it’d matter much if Tris was badly injured. Then I’d have to go hunting down the Game council to make them pay… and that, in itself, would be a suicide mission.

“Is she going to be okay?” I asked, and to my relief I actually heard myself. Faint, but audible. The ringing was fading.

The firefighter glanced up at me, then frowned. “Looks like just a knock to her head, but I’d want the paramedics to check her when they get here. You too, by the look of things. Was anyone else close to the building?”

Grimaldi shook his head, his expression grim. “No, everyone else was over at the evacuation point. Safe from the blast.” His accusing glare said the rest. Why the fuck had we been heading back inside?

“I can hear the ambulance on its way,” the firefighter said. “Stay here, don’t move. They’ll check you out. I need to help my team.”

Ah yes. Because there was a burning wreckage of a university building currently being tended by just four unprepared firefighters only fifty yards away.
